Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born in 1906 into a respectable, middle class German family. He lived most of his life in Berlin, where he was executed in April 1945, a few days before the allies freed the town, for his part in a plot to assassinate Hitler. He had long been convinced of the need to oppose National Socialism and all it represented: other avenues having failed, conspiracy to overthrow Hitler's seemed the only way forward.
